Rogue Legacy 2 is a platform game with roguelike and Metroidvania elements. In the game, the player assumes control of a knight, who must explore procedurally generated dungeons to collect its treasures and defeat enemies. While the knight is equipped with swords and shields and mages can cast magic, the game introduces several additional gameplay classes. These new classes include the Ranger who can summon platforms and use a bow and arrow, and the Barbarian who uses an axe. As a roguelike, players will have to start from the beginning when their player avatar is killed in the game.[2] However, the gold they have collected in each run can be spent on permanent upgrades such as new weapons, gear and runes. When the player starts a run again, they will have to pick a random character with different genetic traits, which may either enhance or hinder the player's combat efficiency.[3] While exploring a dungeon, they will also collect Heirlooms, which are permanent ability upgrades that are hidden in special rooms.[4]
Cellar Door Games announced Rogue Legacy 2 on April 3, 2020.[5] While the studio planned to release the game via early access in July 2020, it was later shifted to August 18, 2020.[6] The initial early access release contained one and a half dungeons, four gameplay classes, and one enemy boss. The studio planned to release large updates every two months, and expected the game to stay in early access for around a year.[7] The game's development lasted for about four years. The game left early access and fully released on April 28, 2022, for Microsoft Windows, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S. [8]
Michtell Satlzman of IGN awarded the game a 9 out of 10, stating that the game is "a transformative sequel that essentially rebuilds the extraordinarily influential 2013 original into a modern roguelite that stands nearly shoulder to shoulder with the best of the genre."[17]

Rogue Legacy, which came out originally in 2013 and then on Switch in 2019, was a tongue-in-cheek take on the roguelike genre: Whenever your character dies during one of the dungeon-crawl segments, their role as the hero is taken up by one of their children. Each child will have a unique characteristic that maps roughly and crudely onto real-world genetic conditions, from colour blindness (which makes the game black-and-white) to dwarfism (which makes the character short), which significantly affect the run.
I saw Markiplier play this, noticed the 1st game is on Switch, so it's weird that this isn't coming to Switch...? I dunno, not a huge rogue fan of any kind. Out of all of the ones I've played, only one I truly enjoyed, and played for who knows how long. (Death Road to Canada)
I really loved the first game, I finally played it last year. It was easier than a lot of rogue-lites and the gameplay loop was short but that just helped make it a fun relaxing game to pick up and put down. I Hope we get the sequel on Switch at some point.
As with other roguelike games, the dungeons are procedurally generated such that no two runs are the same. But the mechanic also applies to your children, so no two heirs are alike. One child may be born an archer, which is useful but they also may be pacifist, which is not as useful. With your fortune, you can build your mansion and teach your children proper skills that will hopefully let them live longer. Your heirs may also gain family heirlooms but they must first prove themselves worthy of such power. Rogue Legacy 2 also features more items, more enemies, more environments, more skills, and more craziness than its predecessor.

In recent years though, roguelites have changed my mind. By adding an element of progression, games like Hades, Dead Cells, and Slay the Spire have gotten their hooks into me. Rogue Legacy 2 is the latest roguelite to stand among those wonderful titles, stealing hours of my life and making me repeatedly promise myself that this will be my last run.
